Tysons Corner Photoshoot

April 24, 2018

A few months ago, we visited the Tysons Corner Metro station.  It is amazing how much the area has grown in the past several years.  What used to be primarily two large malls has transformed into a small metropolis.

For those of you unfamiliar with this area and this Metro station, it is on the Silver Line about 11 miles West of downtown DC in Northern Virginia.  The aboveground station, which opened in 2014, is covered by a geometrical metal canopy harkening back to the original concrete vaulted ceilings in the underground stations.  The canopy is comprised of opaque and transparent panels, offering interesting effects during the day and at night.

The station has views of the Tysons Galleria and many new high-rise buildings.  A walking bridge, consistent with the architectural language of the station, connects riders directly to a promenade serving many of these mixed-use high-rises and Tysons Galleria.

The walking bridge creates a meaningful link between the station and its surroundings.  From the promenade, one can find some impressive views looking back toward the station.  This quickly became one of our favorite locations to set up the tripod.

We found this to be quiet a fun station to photograph.  It lends itself to new opportunities that are unavailable in the underground stations.  Although the concrete vaulted ceilings are what is so closely linked to the identity of the DC Metro, the ceilings at these silver line stations are quite photogenic.  It is also interesting to see how the light and views of the surrounding areas play a role.  You can see all of the new buildings and construction in progress giving one a sense of how this station, and the silver line as a whole, has and will have an enduring impact on the area.
